Venue – Slip End Playing Fields Luton

Date 26th June 2011

Surface: Short cut grass,

Weather: Dry with sunshine, Temperature 30°, light winds from South West - South

What a wonderful day dawned for the Chiltern Cup, after a year of howling winds, rain, and difficult flying conditions. It was such a refreshing change to have light winds and the warm sun on our backs.

As always it is such a privilege and pleasure to welcome all who can spare a Sunday to compete at the Home of Chiltern Flyers CLMC, the Slip End Flying Fields.

As is usual, when we arrived at the flying site around 8:30am there were eager competitors banging at the  gates to be let in. By 9:00am the sound of finely tuned model engines was heard as competitors started to hone their skills and get used to the conditions. This year we were able to run two main events, F2B Aerobatics and Class 2 with the entries reflecting an encouraging and continuing interest in the disciplines. Also there were two Vintage flyers and although no competition could be run, they never the less enjoyed a day of flying, and three flights being officially judged.

The three dedicated flying circles offered plenty of room for everyone and the 10:30am start of competitive flying was met with eager anticipation. Two rounds were flown before lunch with a redrawn final round completing the proceedings. Best two of three flights contributed to the final placings.

Checking out the various technologies flyers employ to get that perfect engine run, and delightfully accurate pattern in the sky, this year saw 2 and 4 stroke power plants, with standard silencer and tuned pipes providing the desired engine consistency in equal amounts. Airframe designs were wide and varied from new innovations to proven designs developed over many years: but all well trimmed and beautifully presented.

Former British Champion and CLAPA Chairman Peter Tindal, newly crowned CLAPA Champion John Benzing, British Champion Roy Cherry and Paul Winter set the standards in the first round, with Brian Turner and Peter Jackson not far behind. As the day progressed the high standard of Flying coupled fair and consistent judging meant that positions continually changed. But in the end the final result was a turn around from last year with Roy Cherry our worthy winner, and last years champion John Benzing a worthy runner-up. Third place went to John Ash who demonstrated through out the day that consistency provides the vital edge. In Class 2 the competition was close and eagerly fought with Bryan Kenzie eventually taking the honours from our own Dave Hough and Con Spinks making his competition debut.

A good day was had by all, and the flying friends who came enjoyed not just the facilities, but also the chat and of course keen and fair competition. We would like to thank John Bonner and Peter Rabjohn for their sterling services judging and Wendy Hough for her faithful working with the numbers and for helping to keep the competitions running smoothly.

A good Competiton and managed to get in 3 rounds for a change, the last 2 years were blown out.

Weather: Warm and sunny but quite windy at times, some competitors said if they had gone to their practice field for a flight, they would have gone home with that wind.

As it was a competition they decided to fly. Well done.

MKM COMPETITION – OLD WARDEN – 24TH July 2011

The day of the comp dawned bright and sunny and reasonably warm, but a moderate northerly wind soon came up and made its presence felt for most of the day. A strong entry of 12 flyers in F2B and 5 in P40 Plus meant that there was only time to fly two F2B rounds.  This rather highlighted shortcomings in the traditional MKM method of deciding winners for what is effectively a three in one competition.  Notwithstanding this complication, a strong tussle developed between Brian Turner and John Benzing for the top position, with Brian emerging the victor in the final round and scooping the pool as far as trophies were concerned.  For a full report and photos of the event see the next issue of ‘Claptrap’, the bi-monthly newsletter published by CLAPA.

Report John Benzing

Vintage Aerobatics

Good weather at Old Warden albeit rather breezy at times and a busy day for three of the four Vintage entries who were also flying F2B or P40. This may explain why there were several missed manouvres (no names), the two schedules being quite different. It was good to see John Copsey back for another go after his misap at the CLAPA Champs. Thanks to SAM 35 President Brian Lever for stepping in to judge at short notice in addition to running the SAM 35 C/L Scale event.

Once again, the Barton Cup was held as part of an F2 Weekend at the Barton Flying Site, but this time without official World Cup status due to the lack of interest from abroad over previous years.

A pleasant surprise was the change in the weather which had earlier been forecast to be wet and windy and which turned out warm and sunny with only the gentlest hint of a breeze during the morning rounds.

Making a most welcome appearance at Barton was a three man team from Scotland comprising Peter Millar, Eddie Burr and past winner of the Barton Cup Ian Galt who has been out of circulation for a while following a motor cycling accident but who now seems to be making a good recovery.

All of the flyers made the best of the excellent conditions in Round One with the exception of Mervyn Jones who was unfortunate to suffer an engine cut, shortly after his model was released. This turned out to be a fuel contamination problem which Mervyn resolved for his subsequent flights.

At the start of Round Two, the weather deteriorated slightly with the wind changing direction from South West to North West and its speed increasing gradually.

This was not sufficient enough to cause any major problems but was more of an irritation as the surrounding hedgerows created turbulent air. Flyers drawn in the middle of the Round were unfortunate also to suffer a short rain shower which happily soon passed over with blue skies emerging once more.

For some unaccountable reason, Peter Millar’s model suffered a control malfunction and Peter was unable to pull out of the Reverse Wing, over resulting in the total loss of the Enya 45 powered Spectre, fortunately without damage to the engine.

As we went into the Third Round, Robert Kitley was the leading flyer with a seemingly assured First Place but with Second and Third places open for contention.

The turbulent conditions had an overall effect on the scores with most of the flyers unable to make any improvement and the final result was a win for Robert with Barry and Roy in second and third places respectively. Overall, a very enjoyable day marred only by Peter Millar’s mishap but who confessed he has a replacement under way on the building board for next year.

I would like to thank our Judge John Bonner for his efforts throughout the day and also our Tabulator Peter Branigan who produced the scores.
