THE CHILTERN CUP

Venue – Slip End Playing Fields Luton

Date 27th June 2010

Surface: Short cut grass,

Weather: Dry with sunshine, Temperature 30°, winds from South West - West

A wonderful day dawned for the 25th year of the Chiltern Cup. It is hard to believe that Chiltern Flyers have been a Control Line Club for over 30 years now, starting with just a few stalwart members flying on a predominantly dirt covered service. We have seen people come and go, visit every year or infrequently and it is always such a privilege to welcome all who spare a Sunday to compete at Slip End Flying Fields.

As always by 9:00am the sound of finely tuned model engines is heard as competitors start to hone their skills, and get used to the conditions. This year included two separate competitions, F2B Aerobatics and Classic, the entry reflecting perhaps an encouraging and continuing interest in the disciplines.

As usual the three dedicated circles offered plenty of room for everyone. A 10:30am projected start was met with eager anticipation, two rounds before lunch, final round after, the best two rounds counting for final placings.

As always it is interesting to check out the various technologies flyers employ to get that perfect engine run, and delightfully accurate pattern in the sky. This year saw 2 stroke and 4 stroke power plants utilised, both providing the desired engine consistency in equal amounts. There were standard silenced engines like the Stalker 51, Super Custom 52, venerable ST46, Merco 60 Rustler and even a little known Ukrainian 60. Piped motors included a Ro-jet 60, Brian Turner Special 60, and a J’en 56, with Saito 4 strokes of varying sizes from 40-62. All tuned to the flyers desire. Airframes as always were well trimmed, beautifully presented, and from proven designs developed over many years

Former British Champion Peter Tindal, newly crowned CLAPA Champion John Benzing, British Champion Roy Cherry and John Alcock set the standards in the first round, with Brian Turner and Peter Jackson not far behind. In the Classic competition Peter Tindal, Glen Alison and Paul Winter all flew tidy schedules. The high standard of Flying remained throughout the day. Judging was fair and consistent and eventual winner of the Chiltern Cup for the first time John Benzing joins a long list of notable names to have lifted the Trophy. A Worthy second went to Roy Cherry with Classic Winner Peter Tindal close behind in third place. Glen Alison and Paul Winter completed the Honour board finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Classic.

A good day was had by all, and the friends who came enjoyed not just the facilities, but also friendship, chat and of course the keen competition. We would like to thank John Bonner for his sterling services judging and Dave and Wendy Hough for their administration abilities, working with the numbers and for helping to keep the competitions running smoothly.

MKM COMPETITION, KNOWLHILL, MILTON KEYNES.

25th July 2010

The weather on the day was warm and sunny with a light breeze to start, which increased in strength as the day continued. Big surprise of the competition was the much improved flying style of Paul Winter, who managed to take first place in PAMPA and second in MERCO.  A full report and photos will appear in the next issue of ‘Claptrap’, the bi-monthly Newsletter sent to registered CLAPA members.

Conditions for the day were ideal with a very light North Westerly wind of about 5mph and for the first time in about 3 weeks we had no rain. The day went without mishap and competitors took models home in the same number of pieces that they brought them in.
