THE CHILTERN CUP
Venue – Slip End Playing Fields Luton Date 28th June 2009 Surface: Short cut grass, Weather: Warm and Humid, Light Winds from Easterly Direction
The herald of the 23rd year of the Chiltern Cup held at Slip End Playing Fields near Luton, home of “Chiltern Flyers CLMC” was once again marked with questions about the weather; would there be thunder storms? But as the day dawned it was beautiful and bright, only later in the afternoon were dark clouds to become a concern. We were able to fly all day on the usual three dedicated clearly marked circles that offered plenty of room for practice and competition.
Looking across the field at Slip End just before the 10:30am start of competition it was good to see 11 flyers practicing away, some testing well tried equipment, others were making last and final tweaks. Only F2B format, was flown on a basis of 3 competition flights, two highest counting. Where, we wonder have all the Classic and Vintage enthusiasts gone?? Never the less a good days flying was had by all who came with no major mishaps.
Eventually the consistency of Roy Cherry took the honours for the second year running after a close battle with runner up Brian Turner, Peter Jackson finishing in third place.
Our thanks to John Bonner and Roger Ladds for their sterling efforts with the judging, and to Dave and Wendy Hough for their numbers and score board work.

Judge: John Bonner. Tabulators: Wendy Hough, Bill Smith. Score sheet runner Dave Hough Weather, Warm, sunny at times, wind a bit turbulent to very light. Very enjoyable days competition. ______________________________________________ Barton F2 Weekend, F2B Sunday 20/09/2009.
It was unfortunate that the F2B event of the Barton Model Flying Club’s F2 Weekend clashed with both the 9th Tournoi International Melusin in France and the Doug. Blake Memorial Trophy at Slip End which no doubt impacted on the overall attendance at Barton. Even so, there was a reasonable turn out of eight flyers who were able to take advantage of some beautiful September weather and enjoy a relaxed days flying. Round one was opened with David Saul flying his ST 60 powered model in virtually flat calm conditions. All of the flyers were able to score high points with Ian Galt and Ray Lloyd heading the list. By Round two, a gentle breeze had arisen which was quite changeable and caused some flyers a problem when the breeze was in the direction of the sun which by now was very bright. Nev. Eyre, who found time to break from his Team Racing activities to fly in the event had a particularly troublesome slot but coped well and managed to improve on his previous score. An otherwise trouble free round was marred when David Saul was unfortunate to lose his model when an arm of the nylon bellcrank fitted in his model, sheared just after he had completed the triangles. Knowing the hours it takes to build a good F2B model it is always a disappointment when this happens but it is a lesson learned and underlines the fact that the control system is the heart of any model and should never be compromised. Round three brought a similar incident and lessons learned when the flap horn fitted to Kevin Morgan’s model sheared as he was about to commence the inside square loops. Again, another disappointment as like David, Kevin had been flying well and was on target to improve his score over the previous rounds. Finally, when the score from the best two rounds of the three flown were totalled, Ian Galt emerged the worthy winner of the Barton Cup and worth the effort of his long journey from North of the Border. Local residents Ray Lloyd and Jim Hatch had an equally satisfying day being placed second and third respectively. Thanks go to Judges Jeff. Smith and Bill Grieve for their unstinting efforts throughout the day and also for providing “work experience” to budding Judge Graham Jubb. Our thanks also to Peter Brannigan who did all the number crunching uncomplainingly in the shade of the control tent while the rest of us enjoyed the sunshine. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Rouille F2B 20th September 2009
