Championship Overview & F2B Report from John Benzing

It seems that the weather gods really favour CLAPA, because for the weeks leading up to the comp the Country had been lashed with sheeting rain and howling winds, but as the practice day began on Friday the clouds rolled back, the sun came out and the winds abated. And so it was to be for the rest of the weekend.

The free practice day on Friday proved to be very popular and all three circles seemed to be in almost constant use virtually from dawn till dusk. this is a something that will be repeated at future Championships.

The record overall competition entry really put the new "Flying Order" system to the test and, thanks to the co-operation of all competitors, it came through with flying colours with each of the four disciplines moving along at a steady pace finishing in good time each afternoon.

Reviewing the actual flying, those Competitors with simple engine set-ups should take heart, as the two top places in F2B (yours truly and Bill Draper) were won using ST51's that cost no more than £50.The noisy, high revving and expensive piped engined models had to be content with lower placings on the scoreboard. However, had the wind been howling it might well have been a different story. But many of us do this just for fun, so why go out in a howling gale?

Concours this year was won by Peter Jackson flying his "White Knight" Model, and thanks are extended to Gary Church and Peter Burgess for making the selection from the numerous models present at the Championships.

Altogether a great weekend and here's looking forward to next year which has already been booked at the same venue for the long weekend of 30th May to 1st June 2008.
